Broadcast Journalism is a rigorous broadcast journalism program with a focus on writing and reporting as students produce content for a live daily news program in a state-of-the-art newsroom and studio facility. It is a journalism-based elective class that builds upon writing and reporting skills as well as the advanced production techniques required to produce a compelling daily newscast reaching a closed circuit audience (3200 students) and cable audience (75,000+ households). Students will work in the field producing news and feature stories forthe live daily show, and they are expected to write, report,and present their work in the daily newscast. Additionally students will use advanced technology to create live programming. The class requires an extensive commitment from students after school, during the evening and on weekends. Nearly 100% of the content students are producing each day is produced outside of the class period.

UC Approved College Preparatory intermediate broadcast journalism course with a focus on writing and reporting. It is a journalism-based
elective class that builds upon writing and reporting skills as well as the advanced production techniques required to produce a compelling daily newscast reaching a closed circuit audience (3000 students and staff) and a live cable audience (75,000+ households). Students
also work in the field producing breaking news and human interest feature stories for the live daily show where they write, report, and present their work in the daily newscast. The program is modeled after a real world local network affiliate newsroom where students master every aspect of broadcast journalism (behind and in front of the camera). Additionally students in the program collaborate to produce short documentary films where they explore contemporary issues. Often these documentaries air on PBS and are distributed internationally.

Prerequisite: Broadcast Journalism 1 (8th Grade) or teacher recommendation

A Capstone model advanced broadcast journalism course for students who have successfully completed Broadcast Journalism 1 and Broadcast Journalism 2. Students will continue to develop advanced writing and reporting skills while working on high profile assignments for national distribution within the Student Television Network. Students in Broadcast Journalism 3 are developing leadership skills, learning the business economics of television news,exploring college and career pathways within the industry, and developing ethics and best practice policies for scholastic journalism programs. In the leadership program, students are providing mentorship for less-experienced students enrolled in the Broadcast Journalism Pathway (Grades 7-12). Students will extend their experiences outside of the classroom in paid and nonpaid internships where they will create digital content while working alongside industry professionals. As a Capstone experience, students will take leadership roles in CHSTV’s nationally-acclaimed documentary film program. Often these documentaries air on PBS and are distributed internationally.
